human rights day

Today was the international day of human rights. Occupy Hamburg organised a march under the banner ‘Rettet Menschen. Nicht Systeme.’ (Rescue people. Not Systems.) It was cold, windy and rainy, but 30-40 people turned up.

To be honest, demonstrations and marches and protests are actually quite difficult, and I’m reminded why I hardly participate in them. When turnout and media/public attention is low, it’s easy to become discouraged and think it’s hopeless or pointless. When the weather sucks as it did today it’s even harder.

But we have to remind ourselves how important our voices are. If even just one person, after seeing us downtown, started up a conversation with their friend about human rights, we’ve accomplished something.
